Victorian Buildings In Cabbagetown - What Is Special About Them?
Whilst many individuals talk about a Victorian building, few people understand that Victorian is not a style. 'Victorian' architecture usually describes styles that were most popular between 1835 and 1900. Utilizing many different elements it is hard to pinpoint a specific style, although each building will have a few details in common with each other. Whether it was a large farm in the country, a little worker's cottage or a town house in a growing urban centre like Toronto, the residences could flaunt good solid craftsmanship and decorative touches. When builders thought about the design of homes, they looked to patterns, frills and swirls to create that Victorian style. This led to criticism by a few European factions who believed the styles to be needlessly cluttered and complex. Though there was doubtless a tremendous mixing of the architectural styles throughout the period, the final result always looked to have a unity of design that made everything work.
The Cabbagetown Victorian Homes are born
Unlike in today’s subdivisions where many homes are built by the same builder in not-too-subtle variations on the same look, the builders of what was Toronto’s first suburb were a very diverse and imaginative bunch. To start with, property developers needed land and that was found north of Queen and west of Parliament, where land had been cleared in the 1830's for farming. The homes of Toronto's (or York as it was formally called) important officials were built on these empty 'park lots'.
The earliest types of Toronto Victorian architecture were farm houses and some cottages. The original building lots were sold in 1845 along Sherbourne Street, with the land being split into a grid design of streets by city surveyor John Howard. The most sensible housing type of the era was the row or attached home as the plots of land were generally narrow, only 15 to 20 feet wide. There is a building on Sherbourne street which didn't conform to the general house build; that was Allandale which is found at number 241 and is a rather elaborate Victorian example. Enoch Turner, brewer and philanthropist, had the home built in 1848 and it boasts a big rustic front porch, decorative two-toned brick work with a pretty ornate trim; this building is far wider than other properties on the street. This house is not the only example of early Victorian construction in the area; 424 Ontario Street with it's gingerbread trim threatening to overshadow the delicacy of the design, is definitely worth having a look at.
