Students who are particularly linguistically gifted may find that the best choice for their college degree, especially at an online college, is to major in Spanish. Students may begin learning Spanish with no prior experience, or they may pursue their degree having been speaking the language all their life. Either way, online degrees in Spanish at undergraduate and graduate levels are focused on helping students achieve fluency successfully.
Spanish is one of the most popular options for students to major in. In fact, it’s the second most-common language in the United States after English. There are more Spanish speakers in the U.S. than there are speakers of Chinese, French, Hawaiian and all the Native-American languages combined – the Spanish speaking population in the U.S. is the world’s second-largest, dwarfed only by Mexico.

Bilingual graduates have job opportunities in a multitude of career fields offered in both the public and the private sector. Public sector employers are typically always looking to recruit trained linguists. Graduates have the opportunity to work in government, customs or immigration agencies; they may even be able to find work in the intelligence communities of the U.S.
Graduates with an online degree in Spanish also have the opportunity to work in the private sector. Although many of the jobs in the private industry do not involve the same types of work as the public sector, graduates will be sure to work in incredibly unique positions. Private industry employers need linguists to work as translators, in customer service, and even healthcare.
Two of the most popular jobs in both the private and the public industry are working as either a translator or an interpreter. Translators work with written words whereas interpreters deal with spoken words, and some graduates may be more suited for one side of the profession than the other. However, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 26 percent of interpreters and translators are completely self-employed, accepting freelance work and setting their own schedules.
While students are learning Spanish, they will be involved in four aspects of language learning: reading, writing, listening and speaking. These four aspects are the most important skills to develop in order to attain mastery of a language. Whether it is at an undergraduate or a graduate level, students will practice all four of these techniques regularly throughout their academic career, and continue to use them later on in life and their future careers.
No matter what career a graduate decides on after earning their English second language degree, they have a myriad of opportunities simply by being bilingual. With the United States having one of the largest Spanish speaking populations in the world, mastering the language is not only fun, but also an investment, especially when progressing via online degree programs. Students who enroll in classes to learn to speak Spanish, or to increase their existing skills, will find college to be a rewarding experience.
